10 Predictions About the 2014 Draft Weekend
Mock drafts are awful. Your mock will likely be tossed out within 30 minutes. Here are 10 random thoughts/predictions you can think on for a whole weekend. Even longer in some cases.
1. Aaron Lynch will be available in the 6th Round
I like Lynch a good deal. I wrote this piece on him (http://draftmecca.com/newslink.html?id=34) and graded him out as my 5th Edge Player. However, at one point, Lynch seemed to building some buzz. It all seemingly died here: https://twitter.com/TonyPauline/status/442095713955368960
I’ll concede that Lynch’s film was often questionable, at best. I saw enough to believe, though. I expect him to be one of those players everyone is crying for when the talent pool has dried up. Cornelius Washington esque.
2. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix won’t be the first defensive back selected
And it will be stupid. HHCD isn’t Sean Taylor, but putting that disclaimer on a S prospect needs to stop. He’s very good. The value of the S position has been shown this offseason in terms of dollars. HHCD is a superior value to any CB (and obviously S), and should be the first DB off the board.
3. Phillip Gaines will be the best value pick at CB
I have no idea where he’s projected to go, but I doubt it’s in the first round. He’s my 5th ranked CB, and I bet that his draft position relative to his NFL career will look the best.
4. Troy Niklas will be overdrafted
Niklas is a talented prospect, but I think his need to develop is greater than his fans would care to admit. I think the sweet spot for him is around the middle to late 3 (there’s no reason why he can’t be a very good #2 TE, at the absolute worst), but with the seeming rise of Austin Seferian Jenkins, I could see Niklas fitting into the middle of the 2nd.
5. Some fan base is going to be way too geeked up about picking Jarvis Landry
I like Jarvis Landry a good deal. However, he’s someone who was so underrated, that now he’s overrated. We’ve had it hammered into our brains that Landry is going to be at least a solid role player, and he will be. WR isn’t S. That’s not normally as valuable. I don’t think Landry is the next Hines Ward that his new team’s fanbase will claim, and the team will regret taking him ahead of Bruce Ellington (if they do).
6. Taylor Lewan and Aaron Donald will go in the Top 12.
I don’t agree with it, but it is what it is. It’s a battle I really don’t want to fight anymore though.
7. Devonta Freeman won’t be one of the first 5 RBs selected.
Freeman is actually my top rated RB, just ahead of Tre Mason. I know he’s a #DraftTwitter favorite, but I just see several backs going ahead of him.
8. Terrance West will be the first RB selected, not Carlos Hyde
Hyde has been projected as this guy for so long, but West’s name is just lingering around too much for a RB from Townson. I haven’t watched West, so I can’t comment too much on this, I just think he’ll go much higher than we’re all thinking based on buzz.
9. Jon Halapio will be the value pick at G.
Just like with Phillip Gaines (Prediction 3 on this list), Halapio isn’t my tops at the position, but I think he will provide the best value for his selection. I think Halapio will be a 10 year starter.
10. The Bridgewater fight doesn’t end this weekend
It is written. Bridgewater will go to the Bengals or the Chiefs. That team will extend Smith/Dalton at the end of the season, and Bridgewater will become the new Ryan Mallett.
